Gym Cancellation Refund Letter (Free Template)

Gym still charging you after you cancelled, or refusing to let you cancel? Here's what works, in order.

Steps

1. Read your contract's cancellation clause. Note the notice period (often 30 days), the required method (in person, in writing, certified mail) and any fees.
2. Check your state's health club law. Many US states (for example New York, California, New Jersey) have health club or auto-renewal laws that allow cancellation for moving away, disability or medical reasons, and some require online cancellation if you signed up online.
3. Cancel in writing, with proof. Send the letter below by email and certified mail with return receipt. Keep copies.
4. Ask for written confirmation of your end date and that no further charges will be made.
5. If charges continue after your effective end date, dispute them with your card issuer and attach your cancellation proof. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act you generally have 60 days from the statement date to dispute a credit card billing error in writing.
6. Escalate to your state attorney general's consumer office or the BBB if they ignore you.

Tip: don't just cancel your card to dodge the gym. The debt can still be sent to collections.
