Cancel Subscription Email Template (Free)
The point of a cancellation email isn't politeness. It's proof. If they keep charging you, this email is what wins the dispute.
Before you send
- Try the in-app or website cancel button first and screenshot every step, including the final confirmation (or the error).
- Find your account email, account ID and the date of your last charge.
- Send from the email address on the account so they can't say they couldn't find you.
Template
Subject: Cancellation request – account [email / ID] – please confirm in writing Hello, Please cancel my [service name] subscription for the account registered to [email], account ID [ID], effective immediately. Please: 1. Confirm in writing that the subscription is cancelled and the date it ended. 2. Confirm that no further charges will be made to my payment method ending in [last 4]. 3. [Optional] Refund the charge of $[amount] dated [date], which was made after I attempted to cancel on [date] (screenshots attached). If I don't receive confirmation within 5 business days, I will treat any later charge as unauthorized and dispute it with my card issuer. Thank you, [Name]
If they still charge you
- Reply to the same thread with the new charge date and amount. Keep it in writing.
- Dispute the charge with your card issuer. For US credit cards, the Fair Credit Billing Act generally gives you 60 days from the statement date to dispute a billing error in writing.
- Many US states have automatic-renewal laws, and the FTC enforces against hard-to-cancel subscriptions. Mention that you tried to cancel and when.
